Here's a beautiful picture of the bronchiole tree - all the little delicate tubes that bring air in and out of our lungs. Each one has protective cartilage to keep them from collapsing, smooth muscle to change size as needed, and cilia to brush them clear of debris.
The two lungs are separated by a wall so that one can keep working if the other is damaged or infected. Within each lung, there are further separations to inhibit infections (like TB or cancer) from spreading easily.
