Strange things in the woods stimulate my thinking during a walk on this 28 degree morning of a sunny day in the shadow of Mt Hood, Oregon.
I’ll have to rake this trail smooth again. A small herd of elk just ran down the trail after I came out of the house.
This baby mountain hemlock was almost stepped on by a 700 lb elk. The tracks are indistinct but you can tell by the next track at top of photo

Pileated woodpeckers are really big. They pecked and bored right through this dead snag.
not sure whether it was a lightning strike or a windstorm that split the top of this Bigleaf Maple
Under the canopy of this Western Hemlock, it’s like an umbrella - the branches almost touch the ground, making a little enclosed circle. Last summer I found where a deer had bedded down under this tree.
This Western Red Cedar grew right out of an old rotten stump.
