Wow - I didn't know the UK's coal mines were gone. I recently read "Rudolph Deisel", the story of how he invented the deisel engine in the late 1800s. He told about how Churchill, was persuaded to build deisel powered submarines instead of steam when he was the head of the navy. They would be fueled by coal tar, since Britain didn't have oil wells, but they had lots of coal mines. This allowed Britain to defend against Germany's aggressive building of a fleet of deisel submarines. The coke, another coal byproduct, was also valuable in making steel. You're probably aware that China is continuing to build more coal-fired power plants - they know the value of reliable, 24/7/365 power generation.
