Part of the problem is that with a flat/gross receipts tax is it would reduce the amount of people employed in tax preparation/accounting. Also tax law.

Yes, a simple flat tax with no loopholes would put tax preparers out of work. But that would be a bonus for US productivity - hardship for a while, but eventually those folks would find work that would be more beneficial for the economy.

... My post left too soon I was saying it left them as serfs on land they once owned. A non-representative government will always take all you have. Maybe allowing a bit of pork might be another trade-off we seem to have to make.

The Joseph story in exodus has always been of interest to me. Here is a good example of how a flat tax benefits the government. By taking 20% of the income of the people over the seven years pharaoh was able to sell the People's own goods back to them in exchange for their land. So their hard work handed over to the government was sold back to them and left them in as
